Here, the history of the Ladin ethnic group is impressively exhibited: from archaeology to language and crafts, all the way to the present. Furthermore, the Ladin Museum is located in an impressive castle, whose roots date back to the 13th century.

In 2011, a branch of the museum opened in San Cassiano. It is dedicated to the “Ursus ladinicus”, a cave bear species which lived here 40,000 years ago and whose fossil remains were found in the Conturines Cave at 2,800 meters above sea level.

Messner Mountain Museum

As part of his museum project, Reinhold Messner – the mountaineering legend from South Tyrol – opened two museums in the Brunico area: the MMM RIPA in Brunico and the MMM Corones on the Plan de Corones.

Messner's fifth museum, the MMM RIPA at the Castle of Brunico, towers over the town and revolves around the topic Man & Mountain. RIPA is dedicated to mountain people all over the world, and showcases finds from Reinhold Messner's many expeditions.

The MMM Corones, located on the summit plateau of the Plan de Corones at 2275 meters above sea level, is dedicated to traditional mountaineering, which Reinhold Messner has definitively influenced – and vice versa. Not only are the unique views of the steep walls of the Dolomites and the Alps truly striking, but also the distinctive museum building by Zaha Hadid.
