A picturesque town in the heart of the Dolomites
The 1,500-inhabitants San Vigilio/St. Vigil is located in a romantic side valley of Val Badia/Gadertal, on an altitude of approx. 1,200 meters above sea level. The nearest bigger town is Brunico/Bruneck in Val Pusteria/Pustertal, which can be reached comfortably by car in half an hour.
San Vigilio/St. Vigil is situated at the foot of Plan de Corones/Kronplatz, one of South Tyrol's most popular ski resorts. Here you can find modern lift facilities and a total of more than 100 kilometers of perfectly prepared pistes.
Just next to San Vigilio/St. Vigil is one of South Tyrol's seven Nature Parks, the Fanes-Sennes-Braies/Prags Nature Park in the Dolomites. It is thanks to this very special location that San Vigilio/St. Vigil is a popular destination in the Dolomites both in summer and in winter.
This beautiful nature reserve is the setting for the century-old, legendary Fanes tales, a collection of fascinating folklore tales which were documented by Karl Felix Wolff in 1913. Today, a number of publications and events tell the story of Princess Dolasilla, the realm of the marmots and the evil wizard Spina de Mul. During your visit to Val Badia/Gadertal you should take the chance to visit some of those events, such as Fanes Poem Musical by Susy Rottonara or the movie Le Rëgn de Fanes (The Realm of Fanes) by Roland Verra. Discover the fascinating world of the Nature Park!
